Effective Medication-Assisted Recovery Program
There are several medications designed to treat addiction to heroin and other opioids. These medications block opioid receptors, reducing cravings and making it easier to refrain from use. These medications include agonists, partial agonists and antagonists. Agonists activate opioid receptors, while antagonists block the reward associated with taking heroin. Partial agonists also activate opioid receptors but produce less of a euphoric effect.
- Methadone (Dolophine® or Methadose®) is one example of an agonist. You take this medication orally to dampen the high associated with heroin use. This drug can help prevent or lessen withdrawal symptoms.
- Buprenorphine (Subutex®), a partial opioid agonist, does not produce a euphoric high and does not have some of the riskier side effects of other opioids.
